Under-stairs storage for your home in Dartmouth Park

How we make under-stairs storage for Dartmouth Park

Some under-stairs spaces are open enough for a small desk. We can build a desk with shelves above and a drawer or two below. If you’d like a socket or a light, your electrician fits it and we plan the furniture around it. It’s worth talking through at the design visit in Dartmouth Park. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about cleaning things with no proper home and coats and shoes piling up in the hall.

A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. A large share of the homes around Dartmouth Park date from then. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts when you contact us about the space under your stairs. It is useful to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your storage is made in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

What we don’t do

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Changing where a meter sits, which is not carpentry
  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Spray-painted finish

How it is made

Pull-out drawers

Drawers that pull out make the back of the space easy to use. Everything is in view when the drawer is open. They can hold shoes, the vacuum or cleaning things.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for the angled panels that follow the stairs. The moisture-resistant grade we use is stable and paints well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.

Under-stairs storage in Dartmouth Park: local notes

In the area around Dartmouth Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Dartmouth Park, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary Brookfield (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Acland Burghley School (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 32% of households in the area around Dartmouth Park, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

Living in a block of flats near Gospel Oak station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Dartmouth Park

Some people simply want somewhere for coats and shoes. A coat and shoe section under the stairs keeps the floor clear and the door easy to open, and everyone knows where things go.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Storage that doesn’t match the hallway
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter

The wider area includes historic houses like Witanhurst, about 0.8 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What it costs

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The width and height of the space
  • The number of doors and drawers

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Getting in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we will typically ask about:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • How you want to use the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Dartmouth Park

Does a conservation area in or near Dartmouth Park affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Dartmouth Park?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.

Do you work outside London?

No. We only take on work in London, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

The answer depends on your stairs and what you will keep there. Pull-out drawers suit the low, deep end, as they bring the back within reach. At the tall end, a cupboard is often better for coats and the vacuum.

Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?

It depends on the height and how open the space is. We look at it at the design visit and tell you honestly whether it will work. Where it works, it makes a neat spot for a laptop and paperwork.
