How we make fitted wardrobes for Dartmouth Park
We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet. If your home has storage boxes stacked under the bed and too little room for clothes, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast usually sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. That layout is worth knowing around Dartmouth Park, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.
The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Questions we are often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Dartmouth Park?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.
Do you work outside London?
No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Caring for painted furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:
- Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
- Let us know which walls face outside
- Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, open and close the doors gently.
Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.
Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. We set fitted wardrobes level and scribe them to the walls and ceiling. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Dartmouth Park
- We work across all London boroughs
- Saturdays by arrangement
- We visit, measure and go through the design before we quote
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
What it is made from
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers can be hidden behind doors or shown as part of the front, depending on the look you prefer. Internal drawers keep a clean run of doors.
Hanging rails
Rails are placed so the top one is within easy reach without a step. Shelves above the rails hold things used less often.
What fitted wardrobes can’t fix
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What it is made from
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
- Spray-painted finish
- Hand-painted finish
- Hinged or sliding doors
- Birch plywood
- Moisture-resistant MDF
Fitting day, step by step
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
- Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
Arranging a design visit
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Bedrooms in Dartmouth Park: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 55% of the housing in the streets around Dartmouth Park, with about 15% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Dartmouth Park, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary Brookfield (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Acland Burghley School (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home in Dartmouth Park is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
For families living near Acland Burghley School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If you live in a flat close to Gospel Oak station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live near Whittington Park, fitted wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.
Dartmouth Park is within the London Borough of Camden, about 3 miles south-east of St Pancras. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Dartmouth Park is part of that. We cover places right across Camden, large and small.
