Under-stairs storage for homes in Gospel Oak
Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. Many designs for homes in Gospel Oak combine the two. If you are living with a staircase with untidy space beneath it and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork, under-stairs cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are typically solid brick, which can be cold, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. A large share of the homes around Gospel Oak date from then. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Flats, leases and landlords
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
What under-stairs storage can’t fix
We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Any work on gas pipes or appliances
- Altering or cutting into the stairs
- Plastering and decorating around the new storage
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
What it is made from
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Hand-painted finish
- Pull-out drawers
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
How fitting day works
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
- We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
- A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
- The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.
Before fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

How we price under-stairs storage
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- The width and height of the space
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Getting in touch
To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

Common questions about under-stairs storage
Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Gospel Oak?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is Gospel Oak in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes, Gospel Oak is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Camden and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The mix of drawers, doors and shelves, and the finish you choose, all play a part. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.
Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?
The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, so it suits the doors and fronts, while birch plywood gives strength to the drawers and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?
That depends on the shape of your stairs and the room beside them. We look at it during the design visit and tell you honestly whether it will work. If it does, a compact desk with shelving can suit paperwork and a laptop.
How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?
How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. The storage is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the hallway as clear as we can while we work.
Before and after fitting day
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
- Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
- Clear the space before the design visit if you can
- Tell us about parking at the measuring visit
Heavy items are best kept in the lower drawers. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. Shelves are made for the things you told us about at the design visit, so stick to that and they’ll stay straight.
Do not store things in front of the meter or fuse board. You may need to reach them yourself in a hurry, so leave the path open. A dedicated door makes this easy to keep up.
