For homes in Lissenden Gardens, we make under-stairs storage from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Each piece is finished by spray or by hand, in the colour you choose.

  • Storage that doesn’t match the hallway

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

Under-stairs storage in Lissenden Gardens: what you get

Every staircase has its own shape. The underside slopes, the side of the stairs runs at its own angle and the floor below is rarely perfectly level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. It is the part of the job a boxed unit simply can’t manage. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are no room for a small desk or a place to work and nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags.

A large share of the homes around Lissenden Gardens were built before 1919, and older houses have lots of odd corners: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. That’s where fitted storage comes in.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Lissenden Gardens

When a home is short on storage, the space under the stairs is too useful to waste. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It also takes pressure off the other cupboards in the house.

People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it

Keats House, about 0.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How parking will work on your street
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Spray-painted finish

What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. It starts with some details from you about the space.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Advice

Before and after fitting day

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Note the size of anything tall you want to store
  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can
  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the fronts clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.

Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. A quick sort every so often stops drawers getting too heavy. Wipe up any spills, especially near the floor, before they dry.

When is bespoke worth it?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Lissenden Gardens

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Gospel Oak station?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

My home in Lissenden Gardens is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
