Loft Storage in East Sheen

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make loft storage for homes in East Sheen, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving
  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes
  • Space under the eaves going to waste

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Loft storage in East Sheen

A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, each shaped to the room. In East Sheen, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. People usually come to us about boxes piled on loft boards and a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace typically has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. Around East Sheen, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Think about how you will reach into the eaves
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing

Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. It is useful to clear out now and then. Heavy boxes are best kept low.

Why people ask for loft storage in East Sheen

A loft room used as an office or guest room often needs storage too. Storage in the eaves leaves the main floor clear.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Low eaves that nobody can use
  • Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
  • Boxes piled on loft boards
  • A dormer that isn’t being used

For families living near Thomson House School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Questions from East Sheen

Can you make loft storage for a home in East Sheen?

Yes, East Sheen is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near East Sheen affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

How do you get large pieces into a loft?

We measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft room. Each section is made to fit the narrowest point, and the pieces are put together in the room.

How long does it take to fit loft storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the stairs and landing as clear as we can.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
