Loft storage in Finchley: what you get
Sloping ceilings make standard wardrobes hard to fit. A wardrobe made for the slope follows its angle, with hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers lower down. It uses the full height of the room. We’ll plan it during the design visit in Finchley. If you are living with a dormer that isn’t being used and wasted space behind the knee walls, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. Around Finchley, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.
Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf pieces come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the walls and the woodwork. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Why us?

What happens on fitting day
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it’s useful to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch with some details about the loft room.
- At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up, and talk through the design with you.
- A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed. You can ask us about any of it.
- Your storage is made in our workshop, shaped to the loft.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill.
Before fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
Starting with a design visit
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Advice
Practical tips
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Think about how you will reach into the eaves
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Note the things that need a home in the loft
We open each door and run each drawer with you before we go. If there’s an access door to the eaves, we make sure it opens fully. You’ll know it all works as it should.
Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.
How it’s made
Pull-out drawers
Drawers along the knee wall make a neat, low run of storage. The top can be a surface for books or lamps. The design visit settles the mix.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting suits angled panels and plain fronts alike. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. The colour is your choice.
Loft storage for homes in Finchley
About 47% of the homes in the streets around Finchley went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Finchley, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Finchley is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
If you live in a flat close to New Southgate station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live near Victoria Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. If your children go to Manorside Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.
Finchley is in the London Borough of Barnet. From period terraces to newer flats in Finchley, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Across Barnet, we cover Finchley, along with the rest of the borough.
Design visits and fitting in N3, N2, N12 and NW11 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Whether you live on a street such as Station Road, Chaplin Square and Market Place or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for loft storage. Finchley sits close to the B1462, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. If you are just outside Finchley, we also cover Church End (1 mile west), Woodside Park (1 mile north), North Finchley (1 mile north), Friern Barnet (2 miles north-east) and Oakleigh Park (2 miles north). Across the rest of Barnet, our area takes in Barnet (3 miles north), Burnt Oak (3 miles west), Hendon (2 miles south-west), Edgware (4 miles west), Southgate (3 miles north-east) and Colindale (3 miles west). Being one of the larger places in Barnet, Finchley is covered for all of our fitted furniture.

FAQs: loft storage in Finchley
My house in Finchley is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Southgate station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. The wardrobe follows the angle of the ceiling, with hanging where there is height. It uses the full height of the room. We’ll work out the layout when we visit.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
