Questions from Finsbury
I live near Old Street station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.
Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Finsbury?
Yes, we work across Islington, Finsbury included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.
Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?
It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing, while sliding doors save space but only open part of the wardrobe at a time. We talk through both during the design visit.
Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?
Yes, as long as it is ventilated. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Fitted wardrobes for homes in Finsbury
What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. If you’re living with dusty space on top of the wardrobe and empty alcoves in the bedroom, fitted wardrobes made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Many homes around Finsbury were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are compact flats in newer blocks. Small rooms suit fitted furniture that uses the full height and the awkward corners. Boxed-in pipes and service risers can be built around, so nothing is wasted.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
What affects the price in Finsbury
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The width and height of the space
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.
Before the design visit
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- How you want to use the space
- Examples of the look you are after
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Finsbury homes and fitted wardrobes
About 36% of the homes in the streets around Finsbury went up since 2000, and about 33% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Finsbury, 30 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Finsbury is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.
Living in a block of flats near Old Street station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For an older house near Jewin Welsh Presbyterian Chapel, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Close to Artillery Ground? Fitted wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.
Finsbury is part of the London Borough of Islington, about 2 miles north of Highbury. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in Finsbury and the rest of Islington. Finsbury is one of the places in Islington where we make fitted wardrobes, and the borough has 17 places on our list.
In EC1V, N1 and EC2A, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Streets in the area include Oat Lane, Long Lane and Love Lane, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted wardrobes. The A1 and A501 runs close to Finsbury; on busy main roads, unloading fitted wardrobes takes a little planning. Other places close to Finsbury include St Luke's (1 mile north), Barbican Estate (1 mile south), City of London (1 mile south), Bishopsgate (1 mile south-east) and Shoreditch (1 mile east). Elsewhere in Islington, we also cover Highbury (2 miles north), Barnsbury (2 miles north-west), Holloway (3 miles north-west), Mildmay (2 miles north), Upper Holloway (3 miles north-west) and Nag's Head (3 miles north-west). As one of the bigger places in Islington, Finsbury is covered for all of our fitted furniture.

We fit furniture in homes around The Jugged Hare pub, Barts Health Archives and Charterhouse Square School. There is a railway station in Finsbury itself: Old Street station. Well-known places in the area include Montfichet's Tower (0.7 miles south-west) and St Luke's Hospital for Lunatics (less than half a mile north-east). For a walk, there’s Ludgate Hill.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose. Bespoke work isn’t as quick as buying from a shop, since there is a design visit, a quote and workshop time first. Large off-the-shelf pieces can make a small room feel smaller, whereas fitted pieces painted to suit the walls sit back into the space.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Finsbury
- Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
- Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
- We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote
- Saturday work by prior arrangement
Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what to look for in a quote.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.
How fitting day works
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.
- You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
- At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
- You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
- We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.
Before fitting day
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
Arranging a design visit
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
