Under-stairs storage in West Ham

About our under-stairs storage in West Ham

In many terraced houses, the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board sits under the stairs. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. Our designs keep a clear way to them, often behind their own door, so the space works hard without hiding anything that matters. At the design visit in West Ham, we note what’s there and design around it. If you’re living with needing a compact spot for a laptop and a staircase with untidy space beneath it, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Not every home has a loft conversion, a bay or a cupboard under the stairs, but almost every home has somewhere storage could go. Whatever kind of home yours is in West Ham, we start by looking at what’s there. Under-stairs cupboards are then made in our workshop and fitted on site.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf storage comes in the colours the maker offers. Bespoke storage can be painted in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so it can match the hall, the stairs or the woodwork. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a recess, a slope or an odd corner, and most homes have at least one. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit.

What you get with us

  • Saturday work by prior arrangement
  • Designed for the room you have
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose

Fitting day, step by step

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need, like coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards.
  3. We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you.

Preparing the room

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Tell us about parking during the design visit
  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Count the coats and pairs of shoes in daily use
  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can

Before we leave, we check every drawer and door with you. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. You will know everything works as planned.

Sharp tools and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Put tools in a case so they don’t knock the paint. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Under-stairs storage in West Ham: local notes

In the area around West Ham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of West Ham. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 46% of households in the neighbourhood around West Ham live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. For a flat, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For a family home near West Ham Church Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of All Saints, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Close to West Ham Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in West Ham

Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Ham station?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.

How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in West Ham?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

How long does the fitting take?

It depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk about it at the design visit.

How much will my under-stairs cupboard cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a written quote after the design visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We will design around them.
