Loft storage for your home in Greengate

Questions we are often asked

Do you make loft storage for homes in Greengate?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London, and Greengate is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Greengate?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What are your eaves cupboards made from?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Do you carry out loft conversions?

No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. Loft conversions are building work, with Building Regulations to follow. Once your loft is converted, we can design the storage.

Loft storage in Greengate

Behind the short walls at the edge of a loft room, there is often space going to waste. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Pull-out drawers mean you don’t have to crawl in. At the design visit in Greengate, we will see what fits. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about nowhere to store bags and boxes and a new loft conversion that needs storage.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Greengate, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the loft room, whether it is a converted room or a boarded space.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, shaped to the loft, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill, with the doors and drawers checked with you.

How to prepare

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Any door that gives access behind the knee wall can look like the others. It opens fully, so the space behind can still be reached. Around it, the fronts can be drawers, doors or a mix.

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

Practical tips

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Note the things that need a home in the loft
  • Make room so the whole loft can be measured
  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
  • Check the route up to the loft

We open each door and run each drawer with you before we go. Any access to the eaves is checked so it still opens. You will know it all works as it should.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Squashed insulation works less well. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf furniture is made for straight walls and full-height ceilings. In a loft room, standard pieces leave tricky gaps under the slope. Storage made for the loft follows its shape. It costs more than off-the-shelf furniture, and what you gain is the space a standard piece cannot reach. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Depending on your street in Greengate, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to West Ham station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Close to West Ham Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.
