Ask about under-stairs storage in Hammersmith

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Under-stairs storage in Hammersmith

We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Hammersmith and fitted. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and a staircase with untidy space beneath it.

Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. A large share of the homes around Hammersmith were built before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitted storage in Hammersmith

About 68% of the homes in the streets around Hammersmith went up before 1919, and about 9% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 64 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hammersmith. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 32% of households in the neighbourhood around Hammersmith, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

If you live in a flat close to Kensington Olympia station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your children go to Corona Theatre School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us about the space under your stairs.
  2. We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Arranging a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Questions from Hammersmith

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hammersmith?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Hammersmith?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Do you work outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. The design keeps a clear way to the meter or fuse board, often with a door of its own. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Flat-pack furniture is designed to be easy to carry home and quick to assemble. Ours is designed for one staircase and made at our workshop to suit it, using birch plywood for strong drawer boxes and moisture-resistant MDF for painted fronts. The right choice depends on how hard you want the space to work. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Do you need under-stairs storage in Hammersmith?

People who have just moved in, or have just finished a hallway, often want the space under the stairs to match. New storage, painted in a colour chosen for the hall, can tie it together. If decorating is planned, it’s worth mentioning at the design visit so the work can be timed sensibly.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out

The wider area includes historic houses like Kelmscott House, about 0.5 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
