Practical tips

Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Let us know about the lift and stairs in your block
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Empty the area where we will be working

Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe, particularly on an external wall. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.

Do not overload a single rail or shelf. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.

Fitted wardrobes in Hammersmith

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that is hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and wardrobes that are full to bursting.

In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast normally sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. A large share of the homes around Hammersmith date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Bedrooms in Hammersmith: local notes

About 68% of the homes in the streets around Hammersmith went up before 1919, and about 9% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Hammersmith is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 32% of households in the streets around Hammersmith, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

Near listed buildings like Convent and School of the Sacred Heart, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Hammersmith, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Brook Green, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. For a family home near Corona Theatre School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Where other trades come in

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly. You choose the colour before we start.

Hanging rails

Long rails need support so they don’t bend under heavy coats. Rail lengths are planned so they stay straight.

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Hammersmith

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Hammersmith?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Hammersmith?

Yes. Hammersmith is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that’s often wasted and can include bedside shelves. We measure the bed and the room at the design visit.

How do I get a quote?

Just message us from the contact page. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We will look at the room with you during the design visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.
