Built-in bookshelves for homes in Hammersmith

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat under heavy books. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about bowing shelves in an old bookcase and shelves packed two rows deep.

Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Hammersmith built before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how built-in bookshelves are fixed. Lath and plaster in particular needs fixings chosen for it.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold.
  2. We come to measure and talk through depths, heights and cupboards, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We then make the bookcase in our workshop.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

Advice

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Hammersmith

Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. Piles on the floor and double rows on the shelves are a familiar sign. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall, which holds far more than a standalone unit.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files

Kelmscott House, about 0.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Hammersmith homes and built-in bookshelves

About 68% of the homes in the streets around Hammersmith went up before 1919, and about 9% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hammersmith include Convent and School of the Sacred Heart (Grade II*), under half a mile south-east, and Church of the Holy Innocents (Grade II*), under half a mile west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Hammersmith joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

If your children go to Corona Theatre School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live near Brook Green, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Hammersmith

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Hammersmith?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London, and Hammersmith is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit built-in bookshelves to the uneven walls of an older house in Hammersmith?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. The openings are measured when we visit, and the shelving is planned around the frames.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Honest limits

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
