Under-stairs storage in West Kensington, Hammersmith and Fulham
Planning under-stairs storage for a home in West Kensington? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote.
- Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
- An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall
- A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
Under-stairs storage designed for your room
When is bespoke worth it?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
About our under-stairs storage in West Kensington
Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in West Kensington combine the two. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and space under the stairs that’s hard to use.
Older homes like many around West Kensington have floors and ceilings that slope, and a large share of the homes around West Kensington date from then. Under-stairs cupboards are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Why bespoke in West Kensington?
Off-the-shelf units are made for flat walls and square corners, and the space under a staircase is neither. Boxed units normally leave tricky gaps under the slope and dead space behind. Storage made for the space follows the angle of the stairs and uses its full depth. It’s a bigger investment than a flat-pack unit, and the return is in the space it uses. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

West Kensington homes and under-stairs storage
Homes built before 1919 make up about 68% of the housing in the area around West Kensington, with about 11% built between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. West Kensington is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Hammersmith and Fulham included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in West Kensington is covered by it. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.
Garden Lodge, about 0.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. Close to Gwendwr Garden? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in West Kensington
Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in West Kensington?
Yes, we work across Hammersmith and Fulham, West Kensington included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.
Is parking a problem for fitting in West Kensington?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?
Many designs use both. Drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space, and a cupboard at the tall end handles taller things. We will suggest a layout when we visit.
Can you match the storage to my hallway?
Yes. You choose the colour, and we agree it before the work starts. A spray-painted finish is done in our workshop, and a hand-painted one can be done on site. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.
Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?
Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Drawer boxes are birch plywood, as it is strong and holds screws firmly. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.
How is under-stairs storage priced?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The mix of drawers, doors and shelves, and the finish you choose, all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Where other trades come in
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
- New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
- Plastering and decorating around the new storage

Fitting day, step by step
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.
- You contact us about the space under your stairs.
- At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
- We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it’s in.
Before we arrive
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Do you need under-stairs storage in West Kensington?
With more people working from home, some want a desk tucked under the stairs. If the space opens onto a room, a compact desk with shelves above can sit beneath the stairs. It’s a modest workspace, well suited to a laptop and the household paperwork.
We are often asked to help with:
- A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
- Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
- A fuse board that’s hard to get to
- Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
For a family home near The Fulham Boys School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.
