Walk-in wardrobes in Heron Quays
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Walk-in wardrobes in Heron Quays: what you get
With a walk-in wardrobe, clothes, shoes and bags have a space to themselves. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. We make it all in our workshop and fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. If you are living with proper shoe storage and hanging for coats, dresses and shirts, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A large share of the homes around Heron Quays date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely have enough built-in storage for a bedroom. Walk-in wardrobes can be designed around the window, the radiator and the door swing, so the room still works. Where the flat is in a managed block, check the rules on deliveries and lifts before fitting day.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

What happens on fitting day
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it helps to let us know at the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Walk-in wardrobes in Heron Quays: local notes
About 68% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Heron Quays went up since 2000, and about 16% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Heron Quays include Church of St Matthias (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-east, and Fitch and Sons Works (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 90% of households in the streets around Heron Quays live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
For an older house near St Peter's Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near Sir John McDougall Gardens, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Queen's House, about 1.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Practical tips
These points come up often when people plan walk-in wardrobes. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:
- Treat new paintwork gently at first
- Have a clear-out before we measure
- Plan shoe storage around what you own
- Count your coats and long garments
Keep the room ventilated, especially if it is on an external wall. Avoid packing clothes tight against the back of the units, so air can circulate.
Plan any lighting with your electrician in good time. Wiring is their work, not ours, and it’s easier to plan the units around it from the start.
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and usually cost less, and in a square room they can work. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely fit neatly. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves tricky gaps, and fitted furniture uses that space. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.
There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes
How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Heron Quays?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Does a conservation area in or near Heron Quays affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Should I send pictures?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, use our contact form.
Is it better to have doors or open storage?
There’s no single right answer. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we go through the options when we measure.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.
