About our fitted home offices in Heron Quays

A good home office has a place for everything. We can plan drawers, file storage, a cupboard for the printer and shelving, so the work surface stays clear. Doors keep clutter out of sight at the end of the day. We design the storage around your work, wherever you are in Heron Quays. If you are living with files and folders piling up and no way to put work away, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A large share of the homes around Heron Quays date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes often have open-plan living rooms. A home office can be a run of cupboards with a desk inside that closes away. Lift and delivery rules in a managed block are worth checking early.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room and the home it is in.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, and discuss the design. It is useful to let us know about parking, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Home working in Heron Quays: local notes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 68% of the housing in the streets around Heron Quays, with about 16% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Heron Quays include Church of St Matthias (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-east, and Fitch and Sons Works (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. More than half of the homes in the streets around Heron Quays (about 68%) were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes often have a compact second bedroom that doubles as an office, so a desk that closes away helps.

If your children go to Seven Mills Primary School or a school nearby, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart. If you live in a period home close to St Peter's Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. For a flat near Canary Wharf station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

How it is made

Pull-out drawers

Drawer boxes are made from birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well. They carry papers, files and equipment. The fronts match the rest of the office.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF suits panels and angled pieces. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. Most of what you see is MDF.

Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan fitted home offices. They help whatever the room:

  • Note how many files and books you need to store
  • Consider your chair when planning the desk
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Let us know about parking at the measuring visit

Once the fitting is done, your office is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Use a mat under a laptop or anything with rubber feet while the paint hardens.

Keep heavy loads on the shelves meant for them. Shelves are made for the load you planned. Keep the weight spread along the shelf.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Heron Quays

Do you cover homes near Canary Wharf station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Heron Quays affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

How long is the fitting for a home office?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make the desk and storage in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Can you fit a desk under a sloping ceiling?

Yes, if the loft is already a converted room. Headroom is the main thing to plan around, so you can stand at the desk. Lower areas can take cupboards and shelves.

Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
