Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Wall beds for homes in Heron Quays

Not every mattress suits every wall bed; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so the mattress you choose fits. We make wall beds from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bed that fills a little-used room and a studio that works by day and night.

In a compact bedroom, the swing of hinged doors can clash with the bed, so sliding doors or a careful layout can help. Around Heron Quays, many homes date from 2000 onwards, and newer bedrooms tend to be on the small side. The space in front is measured as carefully as the wall.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the wall bed we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

What prompts wall beds in Heron Quays

Often the bed is one part of a bigger plan. Cupboards and shelving either side turn one wall into storage, workspace and a bed.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A flexible room for a growing family
  • More floor space in a studio flat

Queen's House, about 1.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Questions from Heron Quays

Can you make wall beds for a home in Heron Quays?

Yes, we work across Tower Hamlets, Heron Quays included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Heron Quays?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

That is something we look at when we measure. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We will design around them.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It’s made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.

  1. We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor, as the bed must be fixed securely.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves are built in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts. We show you how the bed works before we leave.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, and that has its appeal. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place every day. In a compact new-build room, standard sizes rarely fit the walls exactly, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What you get with us

  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote
  • More than 300 projects completed
  • Designed for the room you have

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and how to compare quotes.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
