Fitted cupboards in Heston: what you get
Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a neat cupboard around the boiler and tidying away the gas and electricity meters.
An interwar house typically has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. Around Heston, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A ready-made cupboard rarely suits a boiler or meter. Clearances, ventilation and access all matter and fitted joinery can be designed around them. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

How it is made
Moisture-resistant MDF
For painted doors and panels, moisture-resistant MDF is our usual choice, as it stays stable and finishes evenly.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting in the room lets the cupboards match the surrounding woodwork and is easy to refresh later.
How fitting day works
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You contact us about fitted cupboards.
- We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways. It is useful to tell us about parking then, as a van normally needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
- We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls. The finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Make sure pets are kept safely away

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Heston
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Heston?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Southall station?
Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
How much does a fitted cupboard cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each cupboard is different, so we price it after measuring. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form.
How long does fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
Heston homes and fitted cupboards
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 44% of the housing in the area around Heston, with about 33% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The centre of Heston is within about a quarter of a mile of the Heston Village Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. All of London, Hounslow included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Heston fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.
Osterley House, about 1.2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. Living in a block of flats near Southall station? Then it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?
Alcoves and odd corners are another reason. We often build into recesses, corridor ends and corners that standard furniture cannot use, and make them useful.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
- A neat cupboard around the boiler
- A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
- Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Leonard, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.
Before you choose who makes it
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
