Wall beds in Heston

About our wall beds in Heston

A wall bed folds up into a fitted cabinet when you don’t need it and is lowered again at night. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, such as a spare room that’s also a study. We make the cabinet for your room and paint it in a colour you choose. Typical reasons to get in touch are hiding the bed when it’s not in use and room for a desk and a guest bed, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A bedroom in a house from between the wars usually has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. Around Heston, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Southall station?

Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make wall beds for homes in Heston?

Yes. Heston is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

We check that at the measuring visit. Different walls need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

Bedrooms in Heston: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Heston were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 44%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 33%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Heston. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Heston joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your children go to Westbrook Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Near listed buildings like Church of St Leonard, less than half a mile east of the centre of Heston, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Southall station? Then wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

How we price wall beds

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking near your home

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Helping us understand the room

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF stays flat and paints beautifully, which suits the doors and side panels.

Shelves

Shelf spans and depths are sized so they don’t sag.

When you need someone else

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Supplying mattresses
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Building work to make a wall sound

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Decide who the bed is mainly for
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first

Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, as a heavier one can affect how the bed balances. If you change the mattress later, check it against those limits.

Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. The bed needs room to fold down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

Fitting day, step by step

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
