What happens on fitting day
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, including roughly how many books there are.
- We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- We send a quote in writing for the bookshelves, for you to look over.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall.

Built-in bookshelves in Hounslow West: what you get
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. A mix often works best, with fixed shelves where the bookcase needs strength. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are shelves packed two rows deep and alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste.
A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Hounslow West, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan built-in bookshelves along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

How it is made
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting often suits shelving in period rooms. The colour is agreed with you, and refreshing it later is simple.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives crisp edges and smooth faces, ready for spray or hand painting. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.
Questions we are often asked
Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Hounslow West?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Hounslow West?
Yes, Hounslow West is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hounslow and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
What happens at the design visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
It’s made in sections. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.
What happens if there is a radiator where I want shelves?
It needs planning. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. If you’d rather move it, that’s for a plumber.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.
What built-in bookshelves cannot fix
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 33% of the housing in the area around Hounslow West, with about 19% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 14 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hounslow West. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Hounslow sets its own rules. Where a street in Hounslow West is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know what the parking is like at the design visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Paul, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Hounslow station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. The wider area includes historic houses like Osterley House, about 2.1 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Hounslow West is part of the London Borough of Hounslow, about 2 miles east of Hounslow. Wherever you are in Hounslow West, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We cover places right across Hounslow, large and small.
Design visits and fitting in TW4, TW3 and TW5 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We cover homes on streets such as Ivy Lane, Toad Lane and Bath Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want built-in bookshelves or another piece made for the room. Main roads around Hounslow West include the A3006 and A3063. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, and they can sag under a full load. We size each shelf for its span and load, using birch plywood, thicker shelves or supports where needed. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made or what to look for in a quote.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
