Under-stairs storage in Little Ilford
Not every staircase is in a house. Maisonettes, split-level flats and homes with stairs down to a lower floor often have usable space beneath the steps. The parts we make in our workshop are sized to get through the doors and hallways on the way in. The same careful process applies to any home in Little Ilford. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about space under the stairs that’s hard to use and nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board.
Around Little Ilford, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and older houses have plenty of odd corners: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf storage comes in the colours the maker offers. Bespoke storage can be painted in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so it can match the hall, the stairs or the woodwork. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Questions from Little Ilford
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Manor Park station?
Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Little Ilford?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?
It depends on the shape of the space and what you want to store. Pull-out drawers suit the low, deep end, as they bring the back within reach. At the tall end, a cupboard is often better for coats and the vacuum.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Little Ilford homes and under-stairs storage
In the area around Little Ilford, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Little Ilford, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade I), less than half a mile south-east, and Public Library (Grade II), less than half a mile north. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home in Little Ilford is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
The wider area includes historic houses like Valentines Mansion, about 1.5 miles north. If your own home is a period one, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. For an older house near St Michael's Church, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. If you live near Loxford Park, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

What under-stairs storage cannot fix
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Structural changes to the staircase itself
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.
Materials and parts

How we price under-stairs storage
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
What to send when you contact us
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:
- Examples of the look you are after
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Approximate measurements of the space
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
What it’s made from
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, almost like a factory finish. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.
Birch plywood
Drawers under the stairs often carry heavy things, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. That’s why we make drawer boxes from birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws firmly. It also suits longer shelves.
How fitting day works
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.
- You contact us about the space under your stairs.
- At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
