Before and after fitting day

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Check mattress size and weight limits
  • Keep children away while the bed moves

The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.

Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. The bed needs room to fold down, so plan where furniture will sit.

Wall beds in Little Ilford

Our wall beds are made for homes in Little Ilford and all over London. It starts with a design visit to measure the room and check the wall, followed by a quote. The cabinets are made at our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make wall beds from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a study that doubles as a spare room and a guest room that sits empty most of the time.

In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast normally sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. That layout is worth knowing around Little Ilford, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast, leaving the breast itself clear. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

What happens on fitting day

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and how you’d like it to work.
  2. We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish, for you to look over.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Bedrooms in Little Ilford: local notes

In the streets around Little Ilford, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Little Ilford include Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade I), less than half a mile south-east, and Public Library (Grade II), less than half a mile north. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 38% of households in the streets around Little Ilford live in terraced houses, according to Census 2021. London terraces typically have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, both good spaces for fitted storage.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Michael's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Living in a block of flats near Manor Park station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live near Loxford Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Your questions about wall beds in Little Ilford

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Little Ilford?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

My house in Little Ilford is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do you supply the mattress?

What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.

Can landlords use you for a rented flat?

Yes. We make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let as well as for homeowners. Access has to be agreed with the tenants.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we’ll see what we can do.

Which boards do you build with?

We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.

When you need someone else

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Advice on your lease
  • Plastering or decorating the room
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
