Under-stairs storage for your home in Kennington

Under-stairs storage in Kennington: what you get

Under the stairs is where so much ends up, from coats and shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Our under-stairs storage is planned around what you need to store, with pull-out drawers, cupboards or a combination of the two. In Kennington, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. If your home has nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Walls in a block of flats can be concrete, brick, block or plasterboard, sometimes all in one flat. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Kennington, each wall is checked before fixings are chosen. Storage on a lightweight wall stands on the floor and is fixed back for stability.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
  • Tell us about parking at the design visit
  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Make room so the whole space can be measured

Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. Let them dry before they go away, and leave the door open for a while after a wet day if the cupboard feels damp.

What it costs

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How many doors and drawers there are

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To start, use our contact form.

Helping us understand the room

To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • How you want to use the space
  • Examples of the look you’re after

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Kennington

After a hallway is redecorated, an old, tired cupboard under the stairs can stand out. Storage made for the space and painted to suit the hall finishes the job. Decorating is for your decorator, so it helps to tell us your plans early.

We are often asked to help with:

  • A sloping corner nobody can reach
  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • An old cupboard door that does not suit the hall
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall

If your home is one of the older houses near Calvary Church of God in Christ, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Kennington

I live in a flat in Kennington. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do you cover homes near Vauxhall station?

Yes, homes across Lambeth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

How much will my under-stairs cupboard cost?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

How many days does the fitting take?

That depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We plan it once we have measured the room.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. If it is ever chipped, it can be touched up.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted to match.

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. You tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store, such as coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
  2. At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted.
  3. We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you. The way to any meters is left clear.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
