Wandsworth Under-Stairs Storage
We make under-stairs storage in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood for homes in Wandsworth. The finish is spray painted or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you.
- A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
- Needing a compact spot for a laptop
- An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
Need under-stairs storage in Wandsworth?
The problems under-stairs storage solve
Sometimes the reason is a meter reading or an engineer’s visit, and the struggle to reach the meter. Planned storage can leave a clear path to the meter or fuse board, and the rest of the space can still work hard.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
- A dark, wasted space under the stairs
- A sloping corner nobody can reach
- Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
If you live in a period home close to St Anne's Church, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- A written quote that sets out the job
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
Under-stairs storage in Wandsworth
Every staircase has its own shape. The underside slopes, the side of the stairs runs at its own angle and the floor below is rarely perfectly level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. That is something a standard unit cannot do, in Wandsworth or anywhere else. Most enquiries start with a sloping corner nobody can reach and space under the stairs that’s hard to use; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are normally solid brick, which can be cold, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. That matters around Wandsworth, where a large share of the homes are that old. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.
We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What it costs
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- The width and height of the space
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How square the room is
- How many doors and drawers there are
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Before the design visit
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:
- Examples of the look you are after
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Your postcode and the borough
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
FAQs: under-stairs storage in Wandsworth
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Wandsworth?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
I live in a flat in Wandsworth. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Do pictures help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
How many days does the fitting take?
It depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk about it during the design visit.

What it’s made from
Plinths and scribe strips
We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They help the storage look as though it was always there. The plinth at the bottom does the same job at the floor.
Pull-out drawers
The back of an under-stairs space is hard to reach, so drawers that slide out are often the answer. Everything is in view when the drawer is open. They can hold shoes, the vacuum or cleaning things.
Why bespoke in Wandsworth?
Period walls are rarely flat, and floors are often out of level. Standard units show the gaps, and filler strips can only hide so much. We scribe each under-stairs cupboard to follow the walls and the stairs, and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

How fitting day works
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.
- You tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store, like coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
- We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards, because they must stay accessible.
- We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
- The storage is built in our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The way to any meters is left clear.
How to prepare
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Getting a quote
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.
Advice
Fitted storage in Wandsworth
Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the area around Wandsworth, with about 27% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Wandsworth include Church of St Anne (Grade II*), less than half a mile east, and Church Row (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If you live on or close to a main road in Wandsworth, let us know at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Fulham Palace, about 1.5 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. If you live in a flat close to Wandsworth Town station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
