Nine Elms Walk-in Wardrobes

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on walk-in wardrobes in Nine Elms starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room
  • Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Nine Elms

Does a conservation area in or near Nine Elms affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Nine Elms?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you fit lighting in walk-in wardrobes?

No. Lighting and wiring are jobs for your electrician. We design the units so the lighting can fit in, and agree the details during the design visit.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each walk-in wardrobe is different, so we price it after the design visit. To get started, get in touch through our contact form.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?

Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, while any new walls are for your builder.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Nine Elms

A box room is often too small for a bed but just right for a dressing room. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are proper shoe storage and a built-in dressing table.

Hinged doors need space to open, which a compact bedroom may not have, so sliding doors or a careful layout can help. Many homes around Nine Elms were built since 2000, and bedrooms in newer homes are often compact. We measure the space in front as well as the wall.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Nine Elms?

A spare room or box room that rarely gets used is another reason. Turning it into a dressing room can make better use of it instead of a store for odds and ends.

Requests we hear often include:

  • More space for clothes and shoes
  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • A built-in dressing table
  • A use for a small spare room

For a family home near St Gabriel's CofE Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You contact us about a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room. It is useful to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we build the units in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Nine Elms homes and walk-in wardrobes

About 43% of the homes in the area around Nine Elms went up since 2000, and about 28% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 31 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Nine Elms. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. About 78% of households in the streets around Nine Elms live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Near listed buildings like Battersea Power Station, less than half a mile west of the centre of Nine Elms, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. Carlyle's House, about 1.1 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Decide on doors or open storage before we measure
  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. We can’t advise on your lease.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

The price for your room depends on:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What we need to know

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.
