Wall beds in Nine Elms

Safety starts with the fixing: the mechanism is fixed as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that’s sound enough to hold it. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. If your home has a studio that works by day and night and hiding the bed when it’s not in use, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Hinged doors need space to open, which a compact bedroom may not have, so sliding doors or a careful layout can help. Around Nine Elms, many homes date from 2000 onwards, and newer bedrooms tend to be on the small side. We measure the space in front as well as the wall.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Questions from Nine Elms

My home in Nine Elms is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Wall beds are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Nine Elms?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the design. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you’ll know before we start.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

Wall beds are made for regular use as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

What wall beds cannot fix

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Strengthening or rebuilding a wall
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Advice on your lease

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it’s useful to let us know at the measuring visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with what the room is for, day and night.
  2. We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to.
  3. We send a quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. We build and finish the bed housing and storage in our workshop.
  5. The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Getting a quote

To make a start, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

Advice

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Do you need wall beds in Nine Elms?

Studio flats and small one-bedroom flats are another reason. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time

For a flat near Battersea Park station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall
  • Measure the clear space in front of the wall

Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, as a heavier one can affect how the bed balances. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

Think about who will sleep in the bed and how often. It shapes the bed size and the type of mechanism as well as the storage around it.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Nine Elms

Homes built since 2000 make up about 43% of the housing in the streets around Nine Elms, with about 28% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Churchill Gardens Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Nine Elms. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 78% of households in the neighbourhood around Nine Elms live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If you live near Pimlico Gardens, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.
