Pimlico Under-Stairs Storage

Planning under-stairs storage for a home in Pimlico? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work

Under-stairs storage in Pimlico: what you get

In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. Here the doors, drawer fronts and finish matter as much as the storage behind them. Fronts can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. If you are living with a staircase with untidy space beneath it and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A hall in a home built since 2000 is often compact, with several doors leading off it, which leaves little wall for storage. Around Pimlico, many homes were built since 2000, so that is worth planning for. A shallow cupboard can take coats, shoes and the vacuum cleaner without blocking a door.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Questions we are often asked

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Pimlico?

Yes. Pimlico is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Westminster and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Victoria station?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it’s useful to be around at the end.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. It is common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. Moving a meter is not our work, so we design for where it is now.

Storage in Pimlico homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Pimlico were built since 2000 (about 42%) and before 1919 (about 29%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 151 entries within half a mile of the centre of Pimlico. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Westminster included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Pimlico. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

Close to Pimlico Gardens? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. Near listed buildings like Church of St James The Less, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Pimlico, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can
  • Note the things that need a home under the stairs
  • Think about how your household uses coats and shoes

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. Keep a little of the paint, or a note of the colour, for later. Spray-painted fronts have a smooth, even finish that wipes clean.

Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Put tools in a case so they do not knock the paint. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

How fitting day works

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. It starts with some details from you about the space.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. We send a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, walls and floors are seldom straight. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.

Pull-out drawers

Pull-out drawers bring the deep, low end of the space within reach. Each one is sized for what it will hold. A set of drawers can step down to follow the line of the stairs.

Do you need under-stairs storage in Pimlico?

When a home is short on storage, the space under the stairs is too useful to waste. A well-designed under-stairs cupboard can take the coats, shoes, cleaning things and bags that would otherwise crowd the hall. It often eases the load on every other cupboard too.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • Cleaning things with no proper home
  • Space under the stairs that is hard to use
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it

For a flat near London Victoria station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How big the furniture is
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, use our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
