Fitted home offices in Northumberland Park: what you get

Working from home is easier when the desk, shelves and storage are built for the job. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, shaped by the way you work. In Northumberland Park, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. If your home has an alcove or landing that could take a desk and wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day, that’s what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Homes in an area like Northumberland Park can come from many different periods, so the place for a desk could be an alcove, a box room, a landing or a converted loft. We look at the options during the design visit. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you only need a simple desk against a straight wall, an off-the-shelf desk may be enough. A fitted office earns its place where the space is tricky or the storage matters. We’ll give you an honest view at the measuring visit. Standalone furniture leaves gaps behind and above it that gather dust, while fitted pieces are scribed tight to the walls and ceiling, which makes cleaning simpler.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Northumberland Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

How long does it take to fit a home office?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make the desk and storage in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Do you work for landlords and letting agents?

Yes. Landlords and letting agents can arrange a design visit in the same way as anyone else. Access has to be agreed with the tenants for the visit and for fitting day.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do you need fitted home offices in Northumberland Park?

Trailing cables are one of the things people most want to sort. A desk designed with cable routes keeps them tidy. Any new sockets are for your electrician, and we design around them.

Fitted home offices can help with:

  • A corner too odd for a standard desk
  • Shelves that sag under books and files
  • A laptop that moves from room to room
  • A desk buried under papers

For a flat near Northumberland Park (London) station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Estimate the shelf space you will need
  • Tell us about parking at the design visit
  • Think about the space you need to push back
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

Load shelves evenly, with heavier books and files at the ends near the supports. It helps shelves stay straight. The shelves are made for what you said you’d keep on them.

Keep heavy loads on the shelves meant for them. Shelves are made for the load you planned. Keep the weight spread along the shelf.

Fitting day, step by step

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. We cover floors and doorways first. Sections are then carried in and assembled.

  1. You get in touch and tell us how you work and where you’d like the office.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the desk, shelving and storage. New sockets are for your electrician, so it is useful to think about them early.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to read through.
  4. Your office furniture is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level, with cable routes left clear.

How to prepare

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.
