Under-stairs storage designed for your room
Under-stairs storage in Pitshanger
Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. People normally come to us about storage that doesn’t match the hallway and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
A deep cupboard can lose things at the back, so drawers, lift-up lids or shallow shelves are chosen to suit the space. Whatever kind of home you have in Pitshanger, the right answer depends on the depth and the height. Any meters, fuse board or boiler keep the access they need.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Questions from Pitshanger
Is Pitshanger in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes. Pitshanger is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Ealing and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.
How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Pitshanger?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
What affects the price of under-stairs storage?
Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Pitshanger homes and under-stairs storage
In the area around Pitshanger, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 43%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 9 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Pitshanger. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The share of homes built before 1919 around Pitshanger, about 43%, is well above the figure for Ealing as a whole, about 28%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of under-stairs cupboards.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Pitzhanger Manor, about 1.1 miles south. If your own home is a period one, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. Close to Castle Bar Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. For a family home near North Ealing Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting on site lets the storage be finished alongside the woodwork around it. It is easy to touch up later. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting suits flat, panelled and angled fronts alike. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.
What happens on fitting day
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. We plan the details of the day during the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts when you contact us with some details about the space, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
- We visit to measure the space and go through the design with you.
- A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are built in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.
Before fitting day
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set sizes, and real rooms rarely match them, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Fitted furniture is made to the room.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
