Bespoke kitchens in Pitshanger: what you get

We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it stays stable and takes paint beautifully. For drawer boxes and shelves, birch plywood is a good choice. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. If your home has a central island in a larger kitchen and a layout for a small or awkward room, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Where the sink, cooker and boiler can go often depends on where the pipes and power already are. Whatever kind of home you have in Pitshanger, we plan the layout with that in mind. Your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register do any moving.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made cabinets often have chipboard carcasses. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in colours you choose, finished to suit the room. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, which may not suit what you need to store. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

Kitchens in older homes can be short on cupboard space. A larder or tall units can change how much you can store than a row of standard wall units.

We are often asked to help with:

  • A kitchen island with room around it
  • Room for everything in the kitchen
  • Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
  • A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers

Pitzhanger Manor, about 1.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Kitchens in Pitshanger homes

About 43% of the homes in the area around Pitshanger went up before 1919, and about 18% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of Pitshanger is within about a quarter of a mile of the Brentham Garden Estate Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Pitshanger (about 43%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Older houses often have narrow kitchens at the back, with floors that slope, so cabinets are scribed and levelled on site.

Close to Castle Bar Park? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Barnabas, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Questions from Pitshanger

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Pitshanger?

Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London, and Pitshanger is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

How long will the kitchen take to fit?

It depends on the kitchen. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. We visit to plan the layout and check how the cabinets will get into the room.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish; plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Getting a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

What affects the cost of bespoke kitchens

Several things affect the price:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Before the design visit

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
