Woodcote Under-Stairs Storage
Thinking about under-stairs storage in Woodcote? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing.
- Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
- A fuse board that is hard to get to
- A low corner too deep to reach into

Under-stairs storage in Woodcote: what you get
Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in Woodcote combine the two. If you’re living with cleaning things with no proper home and open space under the stairs that collects clutter, that’s what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Around Woodcote, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille where there’s a radiator underneath. Each space is measured and under-stairs cupboards are made to suit it.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Making use of tricky spaces in Woodcote
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 37% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Woodcote, with about 25% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Woodcote. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 37% of homes in the area around Woodcote date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Interwar houses usually have a straight flight of stairs with a cupboard below, often holding the meters or the fuse board, which must stay accessible.
For families living near Woodcote High School, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. For a flat near Reedham (London) station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For an older house near St Swithun's, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

How fitting day works
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- You tell us about the space under the stairs.
- At the design visit we measure and plan how you will use the space.
- We send a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
- We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
- New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Caring for painted furniture
People planning under-stairs storage often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:
- Make room so the whole space can be measured
- Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
- Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
- Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It is worth keeping a note of the colour so any touch-ups match. Spray-painted fronts have a smooth, even finish that wipes clean.
Sharp tools and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Put tools in a case so they don’t knock the paint. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.
Your questions about under-stairs storage in Woodcote
I live near Reedham (London) station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.
Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Woodcote?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?
Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. We do not move meters, so the storage works around their current position.
Could the space under my stairs take a desk?
Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there’s enough height at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.
Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?
The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, and birch plywood is strong, so it suits drawer boxes and carcasses. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Flats, leases and landlords
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Is bespoke worth it?
If you only need a hook or two and a basic shelf, an off-the-shelf option may be enough. Bespoke storage makes sense when you want every part of the space working, not just the easy part. We are happy to talk through which suits you at the design visit. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF can be cut and shaped cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a staircase. The moisture-resistant grade we use is stable and paints well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.
Plinths and scribe strips
We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They help the storage look as though it was always there. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.
