FAQs: loft storage in Roxbourne

Do you cover homes near South Ruislip station?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Roxbourne?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Will the storage fit up my loft stairs?

We make the storage in sections sized for the route. At the design visit, we measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landings. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room.

How we make loft storage for Roxbourne

Sloping ceilings make standard wardrobes hard to fit. We shape wardrobes to the slope, putting hanging space at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it is low. It uses the full height of the room. We will plan it during the design visit in Roxbourne. People normally come to us about space under the eaves going to waste and a converted loft with no fitted furniture, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Roxbourne, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

What happens on fitting day

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You contact us about storage in your converted loft.
  2. At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
  5. The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

What affects the cost of loft storage

What you pay depends on:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How big the furniture is
  • How square the room is

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Before the design visit

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Where you live, with the postcode

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture is made for straight walls and full-height ceilings. Under a slope, it leaves large gaps and wasted space. Storage made for the loft follows its shape. It costs more than off-the-shelf furniture, and what you gain is the space a standard piece cannot reach. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Tips worth knowing

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall

Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. That keeps the drawers running smoothly. Shelves are made for what you told us you’d store.

Sharp edges and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Put tools in a case so they don’t knock the paint. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.

Roxbourne homes and loft storage

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 76% of the housing in the streets around Roxbourne, with about 12% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Roxbourne is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 66% of households in the streets around Roxbourne, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

If you live near Eastcote House Gardens, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For families living near The Moriah Jewish Day School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Headstone Manor, about 1.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.
