Fitted home offices in Shoreditch

Light matters in a home office. A screen facing a window can be hard to read, and a window behind you can cause glare. We plan the desk position with the window in mind, often with the light to one side. It is one of the first things we look at in Shoreditch. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about shelving that bows under the load and a tangle of chargers and leads.

Stud walls in newer homes can take shelves above a desk, as long as the fixings suit them. With many homes around Shoreditch built since 2000, we find the studs and check the wall before designing. Tall cupboards stand on the floor and are tied back.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Where other trades come in

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • Turning an unconverted loft into a room
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Installing IT equipment or broadband

Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Filing drawers
  • Cable routes
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Built-in desks
  • Birch plywood

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. You contact us about a home office in a spare room, alcove, landing or under the eaves.
  2. We visit to measure the space, including any slope, alcove or uneven wall.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. In our workshop the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day each piece is set level and scribed to the walls, so there are no gaps along the edges.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Getting a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Why bespoke in Shoreditch?

Off-the-shelf desks and shelving are made for flat walls and standard sizes. In an awkward space, standard pieces leave gaps. Bespoke furniture is made to the room and fits it. It costs more than flat-pack furniture, and what you get is an office that fits. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Shoreditch in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes, Shoreditch is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hackney and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

I live near Shoreditch High Street station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you wire in sockets for the home office?

Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. We design the desk with cable routes and leave room where sockets will go. We can agree where sockets should go when we visit.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

The furniture is built in sections. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

Can the spare room be an office and a guest room?

That depends on the space you have. A compact office along one wall can leave the rest of the room for a bed. We’ll look at the options at the measuring visit.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Fitted home offices in Shoreditch: local notes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 39% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Shoreditch, with about 28% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 30 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Shoreditch. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. That typically means a van in Shoreditch needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Tell us what parking is near you at the design visit.

For a family home near Virginia Primary School, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart. For a flat near Shoreditch High Street station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live in a period home close to St Leonard's Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

How it is made

Pull-out drawers

Desk drawers keep the things you use every day close by. A deep drawer can hold hanging files. We size each drawer to suit.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting on site lets the office be finished alongside the woodwork around it. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
