TV and media units in Shoreditch, Hackney
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on TV and media units in Shoreditch starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- Nowhere good for speakers
- Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room
- Cables trailing across the wall

TV and media units for homes in Shoreditch
A built-in TV unit gives the screen, the boxes, the speakers and the cables one planned home. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. If you are planning a TV unit in Shoreditch, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. If you’re living with equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and a tangle of wires behind the TV, TV and media units made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Many homes around Shoreditch have been built since 2000, and newer homes tend to have open-plan living rooms with no chimney breast. That means TV and media units often create the structure of the room, framing a screen or running a full wall. Many internal walls in newer homes are plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Where other trades come in
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
- Plastering or decorating around the unit
- Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Fitting day, step by step
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.
- You tell us about the room and what the unit needs to hold.
- We come to measure and talk through screen height, speakers and cables.
- A written quote follows.
- Once you are happy, the unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The unit is fitted in your home, ready for your equipment, with the cable routes left clear.
Before we arrive
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Make sure pets are kept safely away

TV and media units in Shoreditch: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Shoreditch were built since 2000 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 292 entries within half a mile of the centre of Shoreditch. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and TV and media units can be designed to work around them. Purpose-built flats are more common around Shoreditch than across Hackney: about 83% of households, against about 60%, the 2021 Census shows. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Leonard, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Shoreditch, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near Virginia Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. Mansion House, about 1 mile south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Common questions about TV and media units
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
I live near Shoreditch High Street station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?
If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position and the cable route behind it. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Pricing TV and media units in Shoreditch
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How square the room is
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What to send when you get in touch
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Your postcode and the borough
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
TVs keep getting bigger, and a stand that suits today’s set may look small with the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind, so the unit lasts longer. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often does not get them. Built-in pieces are designed with the right fixings from the start.
Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.
