Under-stairs storage for your home in West Green

FAQs: under-stairs storage in West Green

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in West Green?

Yes. We cover all of Haringey and the rest of London, and West Green is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near West Green affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

Many designs use both. Drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We will suggest a layout when we visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, and birch plywood is strong, so it suits drawer boxes and carcasses. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Under-stairs storage in West Green

Every staircase has its own shape. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. It’s the part of the job a boxed unit simply can’t manage. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork.

Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. Around West Green, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What it is made from

Pull-out drawers

Deep drawers on runners let you use the low end of the space without crawling in. Each one is sized for what it will hold. A set of drawers can step down to follow the line of the stairs.

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You tell us about the space under the stairs.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Caring for painted furniture

Getting the most from under-stairs storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Tell us about anything bulky that needs to fit
  • Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
  • Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall

Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is typically all they need. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.

Damp coats and shoes put moisture into a closed space. It’s best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and leave the door open for a while after a wet day if the cupboard feels damp.

The problems under-stairs storage solve

In a smaller home, every bit of space counts. A well-designed under-stairs cupboard can take the coats, shoes, cleaning things and bags that would otherwise crowd the hall. It often eases the load on every other cupboard too.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • Storage that doesn’t match the hallway
  • A fuse board that’s hard to get to
  • A low corner too deep to reach into

Living in a block of flats near Seven Sisters station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

Making use of awkward spaces in West Green

About 61% of the homes in the area around West Green went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of West Green include Parish Church of St Ann (Grade II*), under half a mile south-east, and The Salisbury Public House (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. More than half of the homes in the streets around West Green (about 61%) were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). In terraced houses of that age, the space under the stairs often holds the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board, and they must stay reachable.

If your children go to West Green Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Close to Downhills Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
