How we make under-stairs storage for Streatham Hill
Every staircase has its own shape. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. That is something a standard unit cannot do, in Streatham Hill or anywhere else. If you are living with an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and no room for a small desk or a place to work, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Some homes have eaves, some have bays and some have neither, but almost every home has somewhere storage could go. For a home in Streatham Hill, the design visit is where the options are worked out. Under-stairs cupboards are then made in our workshop and fitted on site.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Under-stairs storage in Streatham Hill: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 36% of the housing in the area around Streatham Hill, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The Streatham High Road and Streatham Hill Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Streatham Hill. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Streatham Hill. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.
Near listed buildings like Christ Church, less than half a mile north of the centre of Streatham Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live near Streatham Common, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

What we do not do
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Changing where a meter sits, which isn’t carpentry
- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
Boards, parts and finishes
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Spray-painted finish
- Pull-out drawers
- Moisture-resistant MDF
Flats, conversions and lettings
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.
- You get in touch and let us know what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
- We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
- A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
- The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.
Getting ready for fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Streatham Hill
Is Streatham Hill in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes, we work across Lambeth, Streatham Hill included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Streatham Hill?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?
How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the hallway as clear as we can while we work.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Before and after fitting day
The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:
- Plan decorating around the fitting
- Make room so the whole space can be measured
- Note the things that need a home under the stairs
- Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Tape on fresh paint can pull it off, so keep it away from the doors and drawers. If anything is not right, use our contact form and we’ll talk it through.
Sharp tools and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Put tools in a case so they do not knock the paint. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.
