How we make loft storage for Streatham Hill

A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, each shaped to the room. In Streatham Hill, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. People usually come to us about ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs and a converted loft with no fitted furniture; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Homes in an area like Streatham Hill can come from many different periods, so the tricky spaces vary too: a bay, the space under the stairs, a hallway recess or the eaves of a converted loft. The furniture is made for the space as it is. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay accessible.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Your questions about loft storage in Streatham Hill

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Streatham Hill?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

My home in Streatham Hill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you do the loft conversion too?

No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. Once your loft is converted, we can design the storage.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Before and after fitting day

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Note the things that need a home in the loft
  • Choose a calm colour for the loft
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves

Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. That keeps the drawers running smoothly. Shelves are made for what you told us you’d store.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Insulation pressed flat doesn’t do its job. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

A loft room can see more change in temperature than other rooms, so a stable material matters. It takes a spray-painted or hand-painted finish well. It’s used for most of the visible parts.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. It’s easy to touch up if it gets marked. That helps in a well-used bedroom.

Pricing loft storage in Streatham Hill

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How big the furniture is
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • How you want to use the space
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Close to Streatham Common? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. For an older house near Church of St Margaret, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

What prompts loft storage in Streatham Hill

Most people get in touch because the eaves are going to waste. Behind the knee walls, there is space nobody can reach. Built-in storage makes that space useful.

Here’s what loft storage can help with:

  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
  • Low eaves that nobody can use
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished

Kingswood House, about 1.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How fitting works for loft storage

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what’s near you during the design visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
