About our fitted wardrobes in Streatham Hill

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and the walls in a bedroom might be brick, blockwork, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Each wall is checked at the design visit before fixings are chosen. If the room has a chimney breast, the alcoves can take fitted storage; if not, a full wall often works best.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Streatham Hill

About 36% of the homes in the streets around Streatham Hill went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 9 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Streatham Hill. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. So a van fitting furniture in Streatham Hill typically needs a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Kingswood House, about 1.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Living in a block of flats near Streatham Hill station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Margaret, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Questions from Streatham Hill

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Streatham Hill?

Yes, we work across Lambeth, Streatham Hill included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Streatham Hill?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, so there’s typically a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a recess, a slope or an odd corner, and most homes have at least one. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

Before we arrive

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Tell us which walls face outside
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough to clean painted doors. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, as they can dull the paint.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust any door that starts to catch.
