  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs

Under-stairs storage for your home in Grange Mills

Under-stairs storage in Grange Mills: what you get

Not every staircase is in a house. Maisonettes, split-level flats and homes with stairs down to a lower floor often have usable space beneath the steps. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections built in our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. Wherever your home is in Grange Mills, the process is the same. If your home has wanting a quiet corner for paperwork and a fuse board that’s hard to get to, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace usually has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. A large share of the homes around Grange Mills were built before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

If you live near Wandsworth Common, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. Kingswood House, about 2.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

Honest limits

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Hand-painted finish

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Grange Mills

Many people struggle with the shallow, sloping end under the bottom steps. It’s too low to stand in and too deep to reach into. Pull-out drawers solve that by bringing the back of the space to you.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach
  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter

Living in a block of flats near Balham station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Questions we are often asked

How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Grange Mills?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Grange Mills?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

How much will my under-stairs cupboard cost?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

What happens during the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

How do I get started?

It is easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. It starts with a few details from you about the space.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you’ll use the space.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

How to prepare

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Tell us about parking near your home

How to get a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

Why bespoke in Grange Mills?

Off-the-shelf storage comes in the colours the maker offers. Bespoke storage can be painted in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so it can match the hall, the stairs or the woodwork. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Flats, leases and landlords

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the design visit.
