Bespoke kitchens for homes in Twickenham
Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Walls lean, corners aren’t square and floors slope, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. We make kitchens from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a kitchen island with room around it and making the most of a galley kitchen.
Where housing is mixed, as in much of London, floors, walls and ceilings vary from one home to the next. Cabinets are scribed and levelled on site so doors and drawers line up. Moisture-resistant MDF suits a kitchen, and the finish is agreed in your quote.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the kitchen we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You contact us about a bespoke kitchen.
- We visit to measure and discuss the layout and the finish, spray-painted or hand-painted.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish agreed.
- The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- The kitchen is fitted and scribed to the walls, with any hand painting done in the room.
- Treat new paint gently while it cures; the plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your own plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Common questions about bespoke kitchens
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Twickenham station?
Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is Twickenham in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?
Yes. Twickenham is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames and London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you fit a kitchen in a room with uneven walls?
Yes, it’s something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cabinet is scribed and levelled.
How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A small galley and a large kitchen with a larder and island are very different jobs, so we price it after the design visit. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form.
How much time does fitting need?
Every kitchen is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
Is there room for an island in my kitchen?
Yes, where there is space. At the design visit we check the clearances around it. If it would crowd the kitchen, we’ll say so.
How it is made
Moisture-resistant MDF
For painted cabinet fronts, moisture-resistant MDF is our usual choice, because it stays flat.
Plinths and scribe strips
In a period kitchen, where nothing is quite level, plinths and scribe strips do a lot of quiet work.
Bespoke kitchens for homes in Twickenham
In the streets around Twickenham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 39%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. 14 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Twickenham. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around Twickenham (about 29%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many houses of that era have had the kitchen extended or knocked through, so the cabinets are made for today’s layout.
Close to Marble Hill Park? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. If you live in a flat close to Twickenham station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
What prompts bespoke kitchens in Twickenham
A common reason is a room that ready-made units don’t fit. Standard units are made in fixed sizes, leaving gaps at the ends and above. Bespoke cabinets are built to the real sizes from the start.
Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:
- A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
- A central island in a larger kitchen
- Room for everything in the kitchen
- A kitchen planned around your appliances
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of All Hallows, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.
