Lambeth Under-Stairs Storage

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make under-stairs storage for homes in Lambeth, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall

Under-stairs storage for your home in Lambeth

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The width and height of the space

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

What to send when you contact us

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

How we make under-stairs storage for Lambeth

No two staircases are quite the same. The underside slopes, the side of the stairs runs at its own angle and the floor below is rarely perfectly level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. That is something a standard unit cannot do, in Lambeth or anywhere else. Most enquiries start with a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go and storage that doesn’t match the hallway; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Many homes around Lambeth date from 2000 onwards, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Bespoke drawers are made to the depth you have, so the back of the space is used too. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Large standalone pieces don’t always fit the lift or the hallway, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Lambeth

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Lambeth?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do you cover homes near Vauxhall station?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

How much does under-stairs storage cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The mix of drawers, doors and shelves, and the finish you choose, all play a part. We set it all out in a quote in writing.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. A spray-painted finish is done in our workshop, and a hand-painted one can be done on site. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.

Lambeth homes and under-stairs storage

In the streets around Lambeth, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 36%) and before 1919 (about 21%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 201 entries within half a mile of the centre of Lambeth. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. A van working in Lambeth will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

If you live in a period home close to St Peter's Church, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. The wider area includes historic houses like Benjamin Franklin House, about 1.2 miles north. If your own home is a period one, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. For a flat near Vauxhall station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Lambeth is part of the London Borough of Lambeth, about 2 miles south of Stockwell. We can visit homes in Lambeth on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London.

Every home in SE11, SW1P and SW8 is within our area for under-stairs storage, from the main roads to the quieter streets. If your home is on a street like Gibson Road, Langley Lane and Randall Road, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for under-stairs storage. Lambeth is near the A3203 and A3204; on busy main roads, unloading under-stairs cupboards takes a little planning. Neighbouring places we cover for under-stairs storage include Vauxhall (1 mile north), Kennington (1 mile south), Oval (1 mile south), Newington Butts (1 mile east) and St George's Fields (1 mile north-east). Across the rest of the rest of London, our area takes in Stockwell (2 miles south), Streatham (4 miles south), West Norwood (4 miles south), Clapham (2 miles south-west), Brixton (2 miles south) and Loughborough Junction (2 miles south-east).

Flats, leases and landlords

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Getting a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
