Vauxhall Window Seats

For homes in Vauxhall, we make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The finish is spray painted or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you.

  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books
  • A bay with no furniture that fits
  • A radiator under the window getting in the way

Tips worth knowing

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Check the shutters so the seat can leave room for them
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. Keep a note of the colour for later. A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, and small marks often wipe off with a damp cloth.

Lift lids gently and lower them carefully. That protects the hinges and the paint. Don’t overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners.

About our window seats in Vauxhall

We make each window seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the seat its strength, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the fronts and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Vauxhall and fitted. We make window seats from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are a sash window with space beneath it going to waste and off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Around Vauxhall, many homes were built since 2000, so spaces like that are worth a second look. The layout inside is planned to use the full depth.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

When is bespoke worth it?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so it’s useful to sort them out ahead of time. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish written in.
  4. We build the seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the finish you chose.
  5. The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Give new paintwork gentle use while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

FAQs: window seats in Vauxhall

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Vauxhall?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Is Vauxhall in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes. Vauxhall is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

How long is the fitting for a window seat?

How long fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is made in our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

The problems window seats solve

A radiator under the window often makes the space hard to use. A built-in seat with a grille lets the heat out while making the space useful. It’s a neat answer to a common problem.

Here’s what window seats can help with:

  • Needing more storage in the room
  • A recess under the window doing nothing
  • Looking for a reading spot by the window
  • Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay

The wider area includes historic houses like Benjamin Franklin House, about 1.2 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Making use of awkward spaces in Vauxhall

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Vauxhall were built since 2000 (about 36%) and before 1919 (about 21%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Vauxhall is within about a quarter of a mile of the Vauxhall Gardens Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Around a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Vauxhall (about 36%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Homes built since 2000 rarely have much storage, and they tend to have stud walls, so the fixings for window seats are chosen for the board.

If you live near Old Paradise Gardens, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Woodstock Court, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
