Under-stairs storage in Redbridge

Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. If your home has nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags and space under the stairs that’s hard to use, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. Around Redbridge, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, it is worth looking up as well as down. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store, such as coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
  2. At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted.
  3. We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

When is bespoke worth it?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. Ready-made units leave gaps that need filler pieces. We scribe each under-stairs cupboard to follow the walls and the stairs, and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Questions from Redbridge

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Redbridge?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Ilford station?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

What is under-stairs storage made from?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, and birch plywood is strong, so it suits drawer boxes and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

How is under-stairs storage priced?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The mix of drawers, doors and shelves, and the finish you choose, all play a part. We set it all out in a written quote.

What we don’t do

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe engineer

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How it works.

For families living near Redbridge Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. The wider area includes historic houses like Valentines Mansion, about 0.7 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

What affects the price in Redbridge

What you pay depends on:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

What to send when you get in touch

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
