Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Structural changes to the staircase itself
  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs

Under-stairs storage for homes in Well Hall

The space under a staircase is often the hardest-working spot in a house, and the least organised. Our under-stairs storage is planned around what you need to store, with pull-out drawers, cupboards or a combination of the two. In Well Hall, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Most enquiries start with stairs open to a room, with clutter on show and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Well Hall, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Well Hall

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Well Hall?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. It’s common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. We note them during the design visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. We don’t move meters, so the storage works around their current position.

How long will the fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Do you need under-stairs storage in Well Hall?

After a hallway is redecorated, an old, tired cupboard under the stairs can stand out. New storage, painted in a colour chosen for the hall, can tie it together. Decorating is for your decorator, so it is useful to tell us your plans early.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • Storage that doesn’t match the hallway
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it

For an older house near St Barnabas, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
  • Let us know if the hall is being decorated
  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Put tools in a case so they do not knock the paint. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.
