Under-stairs storage for your home in Plumstead
About our under-stairs storage in Plumstead
Under the stairs is where so much ends up, from coats and shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Our under-stairs storage is planned around what you need to store, whether that’s pull-out drawers, a run of cupboards or a mix of both. In Plumstead, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are needing a compact spot for a laptop and a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go.
Homes in an area like Plumstead can come from many different periods, and so do the tricky corners, from bays and stairs to halls and eaves. The furniture is made for the space as it is. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay accessible.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
Storage in Plumstead homes: local notes
About 39% of the homes in the area around Plumstead went up before 1919, and about 29% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 9 entries within half a mile of the centre of Plumstead. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That typically means a van in Plumstead needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Tell us what parking is near you at the design visit.
Close to Plumstead Common? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If you live in a period home close to St John's Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. For a family home near South Rise Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

How we price under-stairs storage
To work out the quote, we look at:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How square the room is
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To start, use our contact form.
What to send when you contact us
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Approximate measurements of the space
- How you want to use the space
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Questions we’re often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Plumstead?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do you cover homes near Plumstead station?
Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
How long will the fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?
In many homes it is possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. New sockets or lights are for your electrician, and we leave a route for the cables.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent.

Flats, leases and landlords
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Fitting day, step by step
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. It is useful to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.
- You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
- We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
- We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Ask for a quote
Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

How it’s made
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF can be cut and shaped cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a staircase. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which stays stable and takes paint well. It’s the main material for the parts you see.
Plinths and scribe strips
Walls are rarely flat and floors rarely level, in older homes particularly. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.
