Under-stairs storage for your home in Eltham

Under-stairs storage in Eltham

When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. A hanging section, shoe drawers and a shelf for keys keep everything off the floor. Painted in a colour you choose, it reads as part of the house rather than a piece of furniture. For a home in Eltham, it can make the front door feel far calmer. Typical reasons to get in touch are a staircase with untidy space beneath it and a dark, wasted space under the stairs; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In homes from the post-war decades, the boiler may live in a cupboard. If it sits in a cupboard you’d like rebuilt, the new storage keeps the clearances and ventilation set out in the manufacturer’s instructions. Because many homes around Eltham date from the post-war years, we look for boilers, meters and fuse boards at the design visit. Any boiler work is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Post-war houses tend to have simple halls and stairs, so carrying in is rarely difficult. Even so, the route is measured at the measuring visit. On the day, sections are joined, levelled and fixed, with floors protected throughout.

  1. First you tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them.
  2. We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and discuss the design.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage we’ve discussed.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are built in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted in your home and checked, drawer by drawer. Any meters stay easy to reach.

Pull-out drawers

Deep drawers on runners let you use the low end of the space without crawling in. Each one is sized for what it will hold. A set of drawers can step down to follow the line of the stairs.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on plain and panelled fronts. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.

Tips worth knowing

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
  • Think about how your household uses coats and shoes
  • Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
  • Let us know about anything bulky that needs to fit

Decorating around the storage is for your decorator, and it is best to protect the new paintwork while they work. Masking tape can lift fresh paint, so it shouldn’t go on the new finish. If anything isn’t right, tell us about the room on our contact form and we will talk it through.

Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. Let them dry before they go away, and leave the door open for a while after a wet day if the cupboard feels damp.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Eltham

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Eltham were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 40%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 28%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Eltham is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 43% of households in the area around Eltham live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Eltham Palace, about 0.4 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. Close to Horn Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Questions from Eltham

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Eltham?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Eltham?

Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London, and Eltham is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. It is common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. We note them at the measuring visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. Moving a meter isn’t our work, so we design for where it is now.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do you need under-stairs storage in Eltham?

Others are looking for a small place to work. If the space opens onto a room, a compact desk with shelves above can sit beneath the stairs. It will not replace a full home office, but it suits paperwork and a laptop.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it

If you live in a flat close to Mottingham station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
