Walk-in wardrobes in West Kensington

A walk-in wardrobe needs air moving through it, particularly on an external wall, which can be colder than internal walls. Moving air helps keep clothes fresh and stops damp building up, so we allow for it in the design. If your home has moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and somewhere for shoes to live, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, and a large share of the homes around West Kensington are that old. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Arranging a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in West Kensington

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in West Kensington?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in West Kensington?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will you wire in lights?

No, that’s electrical work for your electrician. We make and fit the furniture and leave room for the lighting.

Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?

That depends on how you like to use the space. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we will talk it through at the design visit.

Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?

In many cases, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window, so we work it out when we measure.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Why bespoke in West Kensington?

If you’re likely to move soon, standalone furniture you can take with you may suit better. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before choosing fitted. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Furniture made for the space fills it.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Why us?

Flats, conversions and lettings

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

How it’s made

Birch plywood

Long shelves in a dressing room need to stay straight, and birch plywood suits them.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, giving a smooth finish.

Fitted bedroom furniture in West Kensington

Homes built before 1919 make up about 68% of the housing in the area around West Kensington, with about 11% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. West Kensington is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 28% of households in the area around West Kensington, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Cuthbert and St Matthias, less than half a mile east of the centre of West Kensington, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For families living near The Fulham Boys School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. The wider area includes historic houses like Garden Lodge, about 0.4 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

West Kensington is about 1 mile south of Fulham, part of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Wherever you are in West Kensington, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Across Hammersmith and Fulham, we cover West Kensington, along with the rest of the borough.

We work across W14, SW6 and SW5 for walk-in wardrobes. Streets in the area include Sun Road, Star Road and Field Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for walk-in wardrobes. We also cover North End (1 mile west), Brook Green (1 mile north-west), Fulham (1 mile south), Hammersmith (1 mile west) and Brackenbury Village (1 mile north-west).
