Under-stairs storage for your home in Widmore
Under-stairs storage in Widmore: what you get
No two staircases are quite the same. The underside slopes, the side of the stairs runs at its own angle and the floor below is rarely perfectly level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. That’s something a standard unit cannot do, in Widmore or anywhere else. Most enquiries start with a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
A deep space is only useful if you can reach the back of it, so drawers, lift-up lids or shallow shelves are chosen to suit the space. Whatever kind of home you have in Widmore, the right answer depends on the depth and the height. Any meters, fuse board or boiler keep the access they need.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

When you need someone else
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Structural changes to the staircase itself
- Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with

Looking after your furniture
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Empty the cupboard so we can measure every corner
- Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
- Plan decorating around the fitting
- Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
Decorating around the storage is for your decorator, and it is best to protect the new paintwork while they work. Masking tape can lift fresh paint, so it shouldn’t go on the new finish. Should you have a question about the storage, send us a few details through our contact form and we will help.
Do not store things in front of the meter or fuse board. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. With its own door, the meter stays in reach without much effort.
Fitting day, step by step
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. We plan the details of the day at the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
- We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
- We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly.
Before fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Ask for a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Questions from Widmore
Is parking a problem for fitting in Widmore?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
I live near Bickley station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?
Many designs use both. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We will suggest a layout when we visit.
Can you match the storage to my hallway?
Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. A spray-painted finish is done in our workshop, and a hand-painted one can be done on site. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.
How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?
How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
What it costs
What you pay depends on:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Parking near your home
- The overall size of the piece
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Before the design visit
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

In a terraced house, the space under the stairs often holds the meters or the fuse board, so storage is designed to keep them reachable.
