Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or the run is split into shorter bays. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat. Most enquiries start with shelving that frames a window and empty alcoves that could hold books; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Wherever your home in Widmore sits in London’s mix of housing, the furniture is designed around your room rather than a standard size. Period rooms bring sloping floors and mouldings; newer rooms bring stud walls and service boxing. We measure for whichever you have, and the pieces are made to suit.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall, which holds far more than a standalone unit.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Bookcases that lean or wobble
  • Shelving that frames a window
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Books piled on the floor

If you live near Jubilee Country Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure

How to choose a carpenter in London

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Bought bookcases typically come in one depth, which rarely suits a mixed collection. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, which may not suit what you need to store. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Widmore

Do you cover homes near Bickley station?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Does a conservation area in or near Widmore affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Fitting day, step by step

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including pictures on nearby walls. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold.
  2. We come to measure and talk through depths, heights and cupboards.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. We then make the bookcase in our workshop, with shelves thick enough for their span.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting often suits shelving in period rooms. You choose the colour, and refreshing it later is straightforward.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives sharp edges and smooth faces. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted work.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

Several things affect the price:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Parking near your home

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Examples of the look you’re after

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
