Loft storage in Woodcote

How we make loft storage for Woodcote

Getting furniture up to a loft room is part of the planning. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so the sections we make in our workshop can be carried up. It’s a step that matters for any loft in Woodcote. People typically come to us about boxes and suitcases with no home and a dormer that isn’t being used, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Woodcote, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Eaves cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. We come to measure the room and the way up to it, and talk through the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
  4. The cupboards and drawers are made at our workshop, in sections sized for the loft stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the slopes and the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Advice

Pull-out drawers

The space behind a knee wall is deep and low, so drawers that slide out are often the answer. Everything is in view when the drawer is open. They’re designed around any access points behind the knee wall.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels under the slope. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. It makes up most of the visible parts.

Loft storage for homes in Woodcote

In the neighbourhood around Woodcote, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 37%) and the years since 2000 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Woodcote, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 80% of households in the neighbourhood around Woodcote live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

If you live near Dollypers Hill, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. For a flat near Reedham (London) station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Woodcote is about 5 miles north of Thornton Heath, in the London Borough of Croydon. Wherever you are in Woodcote, the process is the same: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. Our work takes in places right across Croydon, large and small.

In CR8, CR5 and SM6, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets like Elton Road, Birch Lane and Newton Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want loft storage or another piece made for the room. Close by, we also work in Woodcote Green (1 mile north-west), Peaks Hill (1 mile north-east), Purley (1 mile east), Little Woodcote (1 mile west) and Coulsdon (1 mile south). Elsewhere in Croydon, we also cover Thornton Heath (5 miles north), Croydon (3 miles north-east), Broad Green (4 miles north), Upper Norwood (6 miles north), Selhurst (5 miles north-east) and South Norwood (5 miles north-east).

Around Woodcote

We fit furniture in homes around Woodcote Primary School, The Foxley Hatch pub and Laleham Lea School. The nearest railway station is Reedham (London) station, about 0.7 miles east. A little further out are Purley War Memorial Hospital (1.1 miles east) and Croydon Airport Visitor Centre (1.7 miles north-east). For a walk, there is Foxley Wood.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standalone furniture can move with you, and it may suit a short stay. Fitted storage stays with the house, and it uses the slopes in a way a standalone piece can’t. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall usually ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Common questions about loft storage

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Woodcote?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Woodcote?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Is the furniture made to order?

It is made in our workshop, to the sizes taken at the design visit. After that, we fit it in your home.

Do you make good the walls afterwards?

No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.

Do you work in Woodcote?

Yes, we do. We work in Woodcote and across Croydon.

Do you carry out loft conversions?

No, the conversion itself isn’t our work. Our part is the storage once the loft is a finished room, including eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers and wardrobes.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What prompts loft storage in Woodcote

A dormer can feel like wasted space. Built-in furniture in a dormer puts it to work. It adds storage without crowding the room.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs
  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving

For a family home near Woodcote High School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.
