Bedrooms in Woodlands: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 32% of the housing in the streets around Woodlands, with about 25% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List records 12 entries within half a mile of the centre of Woodlands. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. A quarter or more of the homes in the neighbourhood around Woodlands (about 25%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs.
If you live in a period home close to Church of St Mary the Virgin, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. Syon House, about 1.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Gumley House (convent), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Wall beds for homes in Woodlands
The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that’s sound enough to hold it. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. If your home has more floor space in a studio flat and a playroom that can sleep visitors, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Woodlands, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

How fitting works for wall beds
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically simple, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Wall beds arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- First, you tell us about the space.
- The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
- A written quote is sent to you.
- The cabinets are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the bed and storage in your home.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Empty the space we’ll be working in

Advice
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Your questions about wall beds in Woodlands
Do you cover homes near Isleworth station?
Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you make wall beds for a home in Woodlands?
Yes. Woodlands is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.
Are fold-down beds safe to use?
Wall beds are made for regular use when fixed and used as its maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.
Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?
Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to use the wall. A desk beside the bed suits a room that is an office by day, and any new sockets are for your electrician.
Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?
It depends on the wall and floor. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, and we look at this when we measure.
What it costs
To work out the quote, we look at:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Parking near your home
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking during the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- How you want to use the space
- Your postcode and the borough
